But which is your favourite? Do you crave a homely apple pie? Or prefer a hearty slice of steak and ale?

2. Apple

3. Chicken and mushroom

4. Steak and kidney

5. Lemon meringue

6. Beef mince

7. Apple and blackberry

8. Chicken and leek

9. Chicken and ham hock

10. Beef and red wine

Betsy Bunni loves making apple pies! Here’s her favourite recipe for you to try at home.

Betsy’s Apple Pie

Ingredients

  •   225g plain flour
  •   140g butter, cubed
  •   700g mixed Cox and Bramley apples
  •   1 heaped tablespoon golden caster sugar
  •   1 tablespoon demerara sugar
  •   Pinch of cinnamon
  •   Pinch mixed spice
  •   1 egg beaten

Method

Heat oven to 180C, 200F, gas 6.

Make the pastry by sifting the flour into a large bowl and adding the butter.  Rub together with your fingers until the mix feels like sand.

Add cold water a tbsp at a time until the mixture comes together in a ball. Wrap in cling film and chill for 30 minutes.

Peel, core and slice the apples then place in a pie dish. Sprinkle over the caster sugar and add the cinnamon, mixed spice and 2 tbsp water.

Roll the pastry onto a floured work surface until large enough to cover the pie dish. Use the rolling pin to lift the pastry and lay it over the top of the apples. Trim off the excess pastry, press the edges onto the dish to create a seal, and sprinkle with demerara sugar.

Make a small cut with a knife in the centre of the pastry lid and brush all over with beaten egg.

Bake for around 30 – 40 minutes until the pastry is golden.

Serve with cream, ice cream or custard.
